Yoshimura Suzuki fastest in Suzuka 8 Hour practice

July 28th, 2011 No comments

Yoshimura Suzuki Racing Team set the fastest lap in today’s opening free practice sessions at Suzuka in Japan for this weekend’s third round of the QTEL FIM World Endurance Championship – the Suzuka 8 Hour.

Team riders Yukio Kagayama, Josh Waters and Nobuatsu Aoki clocked the fastest lap of 2’10.336 aboard the GSX-R1000 just before the end of the session to lead FCC TSR Honda’s Kosuke Akiyoshi, Shinichi Ito and Ryuichi Kiyonari on 2’10.352 and Musashi Harc Pro Honda’s Takumi Takahashi, Makoto Tamada and Tadayuki Okada with 2’10.789.

Reigning World Endurance Champions and current series leaders, SERT, is down in 13th position, but riders Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Daisaku Sakai are expected to be fighting for higher positions in tomorrow’s qualification.

With a bad storm disrupting the afternoon program at Suzuka, the opening free practice session was cancelled. The track remained tricky in the second session, with lap times more than two seconds down on normal; and the weather remains uncertain for the whole weekend.

Friday qualifying gets underway at 11am local time (GMT + 9).

Free Practice Results: 1. Yoshimura Suzuki Racing (Suzuki GSX-R1000) 2’10.336, 2. FCC TSR Honda (Honda) 2’10.352, 3. Musashi RT HARC-PRO (Honda) 2’10.789, 4. Honda Suzuka Racing Team (Honda) 2’11.750, 5. Teleru-HoneyBee Racing (Honda) 2’12.067. 13 Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (Suzuki GSX-R1000) 2’14.430.

2009 World Endurance Champions YART (Yamaha Austria Racing Team) made a great start to their 2010 championship challenge at Le Mans last weekend, battling through the legendary 24Hrs race to secure a second place finish on the podium. Having qualified fourth on the grid, riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani pushed hard, leading the race for several laps until a mechanical issue with the rear wheel caused an unscheduled stop. But despite the setbacks they battled on with their 2010 YZF-R1 to claim their deserved podium finish.

“The initial speed of the race was incredibly high,” said YART team manager Mandy Kainz. “It was a challenging first race of the season but we rose to meet it and the riders, team and bike performed brilliantly. I’m really overjoyed that we managed to secure second place, keeping us close to the top of the championship table. I’m confident we can challenge for another world title this year.”

The Yamaha France GMT94 Ipone Team also put in an incredible effort for the opening round of the 2010 championship. The team had a temporary setback with a broken exhaust pipe but were back on the track after losing 19 minutes to try and make up the lost time. From 43rd place riders David Checa, Gregorio Lavilla and Kenny Foray pushed their YZF-R1, delivering fast consistent laps through the night, finishing just one place off the podium at the checkered flag in fourth place.

The Yamaha France GMT94 Ipone Team achieved their impressive result riding on Bridgestone tires, the manufacturer finally getting an official presence in the championship this year.

“I saw men who never let up for 24 hours,” said team owner Christophe Guyot. “A team that was always attentive to their needs, Bridgestone technicians seeking information throughout the entire race, and a Yamaha R1 that ran like clockwork. We were all united, focused towards getting the best possible result. And this fourth place is a fantastic reward to us.”

The second round of the World Endurance Championship will be the 8Hrs race held on May 22nd at Albacete, Spain

Yamaha take final World Endurance victory and claim the Manufacturer’s Title

November 16th, 2009 No comments

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team took yet another race win last weekend at the 8 Hours of Doha, Qatar for the final round of the 2009 FIM World Endurance Championship.

The impressive ride to victory by YART riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani, who led the entire race from the first lap, gave Yamaha enough points to claim the 2009 FIM World Endurance Manufacturer title. The Team had already sealed the championship title at the previous round in September but kept the pressure on for the final race to take a clean sweep for Yamaha to add to their already impressive list of world championship title wins this year.

“We had some problems at the Bol d’Or round and Suzuki passed us in the manufacturer’s championship standings,” said YART Team Manager Mandy Kainz. “So we came here to Qatar to win. The race was perfect, there were no mistakes and it was a good weekend for us, as it was usually over the year! We also wanted to finish on the podium on Sunday, it was the best way to finish the year.”

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team’s (YART) 2009 YZF R1 crossed the finish line at the Bol d’Or yesterday to claim the 2009 World Endurance Championship title. YART started the 24 hour race at its usual pace, setting the best lap time and keeping an unmatched tempo with consistent times under 1.42 for a streak of 91 laps. Unfortunately the team was heavily tested when some issues appeared and ultimately lost the chance of a podium. Nevertheless YART managed to finish the race to gain valuable points which were needed to claim the well deserved championship.

The privately run team, who already have two championship second place finishes in 2006 and 2008 have been dominant all year on the all-new R1. Riders Steve Martin, Gwen Giabbani and Igor Jerman have been the riders to beat in 2009, taking the first three race victories in a row at Le Mans, Oschersleben and Albacete. A fourth place finish at Suzuka meant that the three points gained at yesterday’s race in Magny Cours was enough to confirm the win and get the champagne flowing with one more round to go in Qatar in November.

Mandy Kainz, YART Team Manager
“We came here to win, and we’ve done it. We tried to win all the races and for the last one it was not possible but we are very happy to win the title here already. It’s the first title for YART having taken second place twice, so we’ve waited long enough for it. The new Yamaha has proven it’s the best bike in the championship, it’s been incredibly reliable this year and consistently fast at every circuit. I want to say a thank you to the team who worked really hard at each round and to the riders who kept going and racing intelligently to bring home the points. Also a big thank you to all the Yamaha family for the help and support!”

Igor Jerman, YART
“This year was quite tough because we started with a new bike and new tyres, so the full package. Before the season started we had a lot of tests, we worked really hard to set up the bike for Michelin tyres and it worked really well. The season has been great; we’ve had no problems apart from the last race, so we are very happy with the bike. It’s great to have won the title, this was our wish for this year, we tried really hard and we did it. I’m really happy for Mandy and he worked really hard to make a good team and a good bike so deserves this win.”

Steve Martin, YART
“I feel ecstatic for the team, for Yamaha and all our technical partners, I want to say thank you for making my dreams come true. It’s fantastic to win with one race in hand so we can go to Qatar and really enjoy it with the pressure off. Big thanks to my fellow riders as well, it’s been a pleasure racing with them this year.”

Gwen Giabbani, YART
“I feel a bit disappointed about yesterday’s race as we had the speed and everything we needed to win. We have the title though so I feel better! The rest of the year was all perfect, winning at Le Mans to start with was unexpected but the best thing for us, and we knew we were capable of winning the other races from then on. It all ran easy from there, we just missed the podium at Suzuka but we took the points we needed and apart from that it’s been great.”

In the UK, another successful weekend of racing at Croft saw GSE rider Leon Camier take a 6th and a 1st (his 16th victory of the year) while his team-mate James Ellison took a 2nd and a 4th. The results mean Yamaha have clinched the manufacturer’s title for the British Championship, and as the final two rounds of the British Superbike Championship approach, the last races will decide which of the two Airwaves Yamaha riders will claim the title, another victory for the 2009 R1.

There was more celebrating in Germany yesterday as Jorg Teuchert wrapped up the final round of the IDM German Superbike Championship with a second place and a victory. Teuchert had already secured the title by Assen last month having dominated all year on his R1.

BSB Worx Crescent Suzuki's Sylvain Guintoli

It’s another slow week in the world of motorcycle racing, especially for those of us here in the US.  AMA Pro Road Racing concluded its season last weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park, and the cancellation of the Hungary MotoGP race at Balatonring leaves a gap in that schedule as well.  World Superbike action will resume in two weeks at Imola with a new points leader in the form of American rookie Ben Spies.  If you’re in the UK, you’ll be treated to BSB round 10 at Croft where Ryuichi Kiyonari will make his return to British Superbikes and Worx Suzuki – and former MotoGP rider – Sylvain Guintoli is still looking to get back to racing form after his early season injury.  The FIM World Endurance Championship heads to Magny-Cours, France where they believe that any race lasting less than 24 hours is a waste of time, and, here in the States, there are many local and regional events at tracks throughout the country. Check your local tracks or call your local motorcycle dealers for more information on events in your area.
