Johnson Wins Fifth AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National at Daytona Flat Track

March 5th, 2010 cranialooze No comments

AMA Flat Track LogoAnother packed house turned out on another cold night for Round Two of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship.  The new DAYTONA Flat Track presented the riders with a whole different race track from the Series opener. Despite being much smoother and faster the slick surface proved to be a major challenge all night.

Jake Johnson is sporting a new number on a new team, but the Zanotti Racing backed veteran ended the night with his fifth Daytona National win on his number 5 Zanotti Racing / Leo Vince backed Honda. “I knew I had to get out front and stay smooth,” said Johnson. “I could hear someone back there and with about four laps left I peeked. I saw that big number two and thought, ‘Oh oh here comes Coolbeth.’ I knew I had to keep my concentration and stay on my lines.”

Johnson had obviously been fast all night, but last night’s winner Sammy Halbert had been fast qualifier on his # 7 Woody Kyle Racing / Fredericktown Yamaha / Kings Kustoms backed Yamaha, picking up the $250 Arai fast qualifier check.

Johnson’s win in the second qualifying heat would put him on the pole for the National as the other two heats were red flagged at some point, ending any chance for fast time.

In the GNC Dash Sammy Halbert showed the same speed and determination as he had with last night’s win. Halbert stayed glued to the bottom while Joe Kopp had his # 3 American Agip / Latus Harley-Davidson backed Honda riding the rim.

Kopp came up just inches short at the line as the two Washington riders charged out of turn four. Johnson was just a tick back in third.

The start of the twenty five lap National saw Johnson on the point with Sammy Halbert right on his heels. As Halbert tried to shoot under Johnson exiting turn two he hit a slick spot starting and started a slow spin right in front of the entire field. Somehow everyone missed him and with the engine still running Halbert rejoined the chase.

Johnson had been presented a gift of a little space on the field as the avoided the # 7 bike and he made the most of it. Kopp was back up at the top of the track in second with Johnny Lewis and his # 10 Scott Powersports / Pit Posse / Monster Energy backed Honda in third.

Defending GNC Singles Champion Henry Wiles was also on the high line with his Kawasaki USA / Don’s Kawasaki / Shift Racing / Jones Brothers Racing backed # 1 Kawasaki, but that high line would go away and both Kopp and Wiles would fade into the pack.

While Johnson was cruising, the large crowds attention was riveted on the # 7 as Halbert caught the back of the pack by lap night and started working his way to the front, by lap fourteen he was in tenth place and still working forward. That was where the fairytale ended however as his Yamaha gave up and Sammy’s night was over too soon.

Almost unnoticed, Jared Mees had been working his Pro Honda Oils / Montgomeryville Cycle Center / Rogers Lake Racing backed # 21 Honda into second, but that was short lived as Kenny Coolbeth was coming from even farther back on his # 2 Bettencourt’s Honda / Jason Perry backed Honda.

Coolbeth was able to come from ninth to second by lap twelve, but that is where is drive stalled. Coolbeth cut into Johnson’s lead, but never challenged.

Johnny Lewis capped off a fine couple of days on his # 10 Scott Powersports / Pit Posse / Monster Energy backed Honda with a fourth place finish. Jethro Halbert kept Halbert Family racing in the mix as he rode a steady race to fifth on his # 69 Woddy Kyle Racing / Fredericktown Yamaha / Kings Kustom backed Yamaha.

In the Pro Singles class JD Beach had been road racing at the neighboring speedway all day and missed practice, but was allowed to ride one four lap qualifying session. He was able to turn sixth fast time his # 95C Alpinestars / Arai / Oakley / Team 95 backed Honda.

In the Pro Singles Main, defending Pro Singles Champion Brad Baker got the hole shot on his # 1 Mike Velasco Racing / Brothers Power Sports / Rod Lake backed Honda, but he had a whole horde of riders right behind.

On lap four Beach wedged himself under Baker as they exited turn two and took command for the remaining twelve laps. Stephen Vanderkuur pushed the # 10J Dallas Fort Worth Honda / D&D Exhaust backed Honda to the front of a three way battle over second.

As Beach cruised, the podium appeared to be set, but a last lap shake-up saw last nights winner, Jeff Carver slip his # 24P Van`s Yamaha / Yamaha Motor Co / GYTR / Carver`s BBQ backed Yamaha into second. Baker held on for third.

Airfence Barriers to be deployed for 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship season

AMA Pro Racing is proud to announce Airfence brand inflatable soft barriers will be deployed for the 2010 AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship, beginning with the Daytona Short Track Nationals on March 3-4, 2010.

Due to concerns for rider safety, the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association (IMDA) has agreed to donate its fleet of 30-foot sections of Airfence inflatable soft barrier to the Roadracing World Action Fund (RWAF), which will assign a total of 46 sections to AMA Pro Racing for deployment exclusively at flat track racing events.

In 2005, the IMDA purchased 30 sections of Airfence with a grant received from Ford Motor Company, and donations to the RWAF by fans, racers and sponsors funded the purchase of 16 additional sections. Those 46 sections have been deployed by IMDA at flat track events, mostly in the Midwest.

Tommra Kiesow, Director of the IMDA said, “We are proud to be able to donate such an important asset to the sport of flat track racing, with the help of the RWAF. We are confident AMA Pro Racing will handle the Airfence with expert care and get many more years of use.”

Airfence inflatable soft barriers are designed and manufactured by Airfence Safety Systems (Australia) Pty. Ltd. and used extensively in motorcycle racing to help protect riders from hitting hard walls or objects as the result of a crash.

“When I first heard the Airfence was going to be available, I thought ‘Wow.’ I know from my experience as a board member of the Roadracing World Action Fund the logistical and financial commitment it takes to deploy Airfence at races on the Grand National Championship is no easy task,” said Chris Carr, seven-time AMA Pro Grand National Champion. “I applaud the IMDA and AMA Pro Racing’s proactive approach to rider safety.”

Mike Kidd, AMA Pro Racing Director of Flat Track said, “The IMDA has done a great job providing Airfence to their mile races and other events which needed extra protection. I am glad we can now extend that same safety protection to all our half-mile and mile events along with selected short track and TT races.”

Joe Kopp Dominates the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Competition at Beulah Park

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 18, 2009) – A hot Sunday afternoon greeted Round Six of the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Twins Championship as the series moved to the challenging mile oval of Beulah Park in Grove City, Ohio for the Flying Horse Mile.

Latus Harley-Davidson / Screamin’ Eagle’s No. 3 Joe Kopp did the unheard of in Sunday’s mile track AMA Pro Flat Track event. The Washington veteran not only led every lap, but he pulled away to a 22-second lead over last year’s Beulah Park winner, No. 42 Bryan Smith (Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson / Moroney’s Harley-Davidson). Smith’s race was none the less impressive as he held more than an eight-second lead over Halbert Family / King Kustoms’ No. 43 Sammy Halbert.

“I guess this kind of makes up for the last three or four Nationals that haven’t gone so well,” Kopp said of his dominating ride. “I knew I wanted to get the hole shot and after I did, I battled with Bryan (Smith) for a few laps, but I cut a couple of good laps and got away. After I started to lap people, I just wanted to catch them and pass them.”

Kopp was able to lap the all of the riders up through eighth place. The last of his victims were current points leader Blue Springs Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson’s No. 21 Jared Mees and seven-time Grand National Champion No. 4 Chris Carr, who finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Canadian National Champion No. 53 Don Taylor had his best AMA Pro Grand National Twins finish as he propelled his Deeley’s Harley-Davidson home to fourth. Just a few seconds back in fifth place came the Memphis Shades backed Harley-Davidson of No. 33 JR Schnabel.

Some last lap confusion ruined the only race for position on the race track. Matt’s Racing / Silkolene’s No. 20 Matt Weidman and Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s No. 1 Kenny Coolbeth battled back and fourth over the last quarter of the race only to have Weidman misinterpret the flags as Kopp closed to put them down a lap. Kopp would finish right on their tails as Weidman backed off thinking his race was over.  Coolbeth raced on to finish sixth to Weidman’s seventh by four seconds.  National Cycle / Reiman’s Harley-Davidson’s No. 26 Brandan Bergen rounded out the top 10.

Earlier in the day Pro Honda Oils / Total Control Racing’s No. 10J Stephen Vanderkuur had spanked the Pro Singles class in the same way, leading all twelve laps of the main. Vanderkurr had a little early pressure from his Total Control teammate No. 22J Chaz Springsteen, but Springsteen slipped back into a battle with Weirbach Racing’s No. 71B James Rispoli.

Rispoli grabbed second on Lap 3, but he couldn’t shake Springsteen. That great race came to an end when Springsteen slid down in Turn 4.

Rispoli was a solid second as current points leader Mike Velasco / Brothers Powersports’ No. 17M Brad Baker sat just one second back in third. Van’s Yamaha’s No. 24P Jeff Carver and Western Hills Honda’s No. 81C Zach Palmer rounded out the top five in the Pro Singles class.
