WTR San Marino Practice Report: Valencia

November 5th, 2010 No comments

Following the heavy rain in Portugal last weekend, today brought a little respite during the final free practice for the 2010 season. In fact, the sun was shining upon Spain’s Circuit de la Comunitat Valenciana and the temperatures were quite warm.

WTR's Valentin Debise

It was a positive session for WTR San Marino 125cc rider Johann Zarco. After an unimpressive morning session, Zarco attacked the afternoon with determination and aggressiveness. With the help of his team, he improved the set up of his bike. He improved his lap times throughout the session, and finished in the ninth provisional position. Tomorrow he will try to improve again his position for the grid.

Conversely, today brought some difficulties for Valentin Debise. The session started with the same setting used at the pre-season test in March, which gave great results. During the last two races, the chassis was changed and, although the bike’s setup was good in Portugal and Debise held fourth for some laps, the same results didn’t come today. Debise closed the session in 39th position. Tomorrow, the Frenchman and his team will try to solve today’s problems to gain some positions for the starting grid.

Johann Jarco – 9th time (1’41.992 – 16 laps):
“This morning I wasn’t satisfy at all, but I worked hardly. Both my coach and my chief mechanic gave me the right indication to improve me and the bike. I went straight but then I waited for a nd followed the fast riders and their paths. This was really useful to lower my laptime. If tomorrow the weather will be without wind and not too warm like today, will be perfect.”

Valentin Debise – 39th time (1’39.817 – 19 laps):
“This afternoon I wasn’t so fast as this morning. I think the setting we used were not correct: for tomorrow we need to try to come back or change all completely, see that at the moment we are using another chassis, so different from the previous. Trying a different chassis at the end of the year is not so easy. I’m sure with the old one we could go better.”

An unlucky Sunday at Estoril for the WTR San Marino Team, scoring DNFs in 125 and Moto2

November 1st, 2010 No comments

After Saturday’s heavy rains at the Estoril Circuit during the MotoGP bwin Grande Premio de Portugal, Sunday’s conditions gradually improved during the afternoon. By race time, only a few wet spots remained.

Due to the needs of live television, Moto2 took to the track first on Sunday, and WTR San Marino’s Valentin Debise had an excellent and swift departure. The Moto2 race was declared dry although the track was still quite moist in some spots. Debise got off well from the  fourth row, and the Frenchman moved into fourth place by the second lap in fourth place, and held position for the first few laps. However, a severe pain caused by a crash that occurred on Saturday became too much to bear, and Debise began to lose positions quickly before and he was forced to retire.

WTR's Johann Zarco

It was also a difficult race for 125cc rider Johann Zarco.  The French rider, starting from 18th position, was unable to gain ground, and he fought to maintain his place. Unfortunately, the track was very slippery and he crashed with a group of other riders. After four laps, rain again began to fall, which forced the interruption of the race. Zarco was unable to take part in the restart.

VALENTIN DEBISE – retired:
“The bike was good, but it was a pity for the pain in my leg and for this reason I was not longer able to ride.”

JOHANN ZARCO – crashed:
“I crashed at the eighth lap while I was fighting with [Jonas] Folger. Unfortunately in a moment I realized I crashed. This fall was really a shame, this could be a good race, the bike went really well and I’m sure I could remount and finish in the points zone. “

Provisional front row for Johann Zarco. 15th for Valentin Debise.

WTR's Johann Zarco

The first day of free practice for the Bwin Grand Premio de Portugal took place mainly in heavy rain, which significantly lowered the temperatures and made the Estoril track extremely slippery and treacherous.

WTR San Marino’s Johann Zarco had the pace from the early minutes of 125cc practice. The session, which had the potential to give the young Frenchman his first provisional pole was, unfortunately, ruined by a crash just three minutes prior the end of the session and also by Alberto Moncayo, who at the last lap, bested Zarco’s time by nearly a second, giving him the pole. The finish was, however, a good second place for Zarco, who rode very well despite the difficult weather conditions.

The sun came out during the Moto2 practice session, although the track conditions were still uncertain: the asphalt was still wet for the half of the session, but later dried almost completely. Valentin Debise was able to run only ten laps, and finished in fifteenth, in decent position for tomorrow’s qualifying run.

JOHANN ZARCO – 2nd time (2’06.553 – 16 laps):

“I’m happy for this second time: I had a great feeling in the wet condition and the bike was fine. I was the first during all the session, from the beginning: was only a pity a small crash 3 minutes to go and another rider who took me the pole position. Anyway that’s okay. ”

VALENTIN DEBISE – 15th time (1’55 .169 – 10 laps):
“I started with rain tires, but at mid-turn the track began to dry. As soon as we put the slicks, I was not sure yet, but when I managed to get a little more the feeling, I managed to finish in 15th position. I’m happy because the bike was good and very fast. “

WTR’s Zarco 17th in 125cc. Debise crashes, finishes 38th in Moto2

Johann Zarco

Today is the last Friday of free practice before the summer break for the 125cc and Moto2, and as has been the case several times so far in the season, Thursday’s sessions brought rain, while today brings sunshine and hot temperatures.

125cc class rider Johann Zarco, riding today on his 20th birthday, had some trouble with his bike at the beginning of the session and lost twenty minutes trying to find a better setup. The team was quick to set up the motorcycle, and Zarco immediately started to improve.  However, due to his problems with the bike, he closed this session in only 17th position. His team is confident for tomorrow though, now that the young rider can focus his attention in riding and not on the setting of the bike.

Valentin Debise

Today’s practice sessions were also unlucky for Moto2’s Valentin Debise who went down while in 25th position. He came away uninjured, but damage to the bike made it impossible for him to return to the track for the final session.  He finished in 38th position without any real chance to improve his lap times.

JOHANN ZARCO – 17th position (1’30.102 – 19 laps):
“Today we were a bit unluckily. At the beginning of the session, we had a problem with the bike that didn’t switch on and we lost 20 minutes. Then I was quiet when I started and I only took my landmarks. We didn’t change my bike setting because our objective was to take the faster riders like models and try to follow them. Unluckily, I was unable to follow them, because every time someone stopped or eased himself, and for this reason I lost time and I didn’t improve my lap time.  Anyway, I well understood my errors and I gave important information at my chief mechanic. For sure tomorrow will be better.”

VALENTIN DEBISE – 38th position (1’28.859 – 9 laps):

“I started well, I was riding alone, I had a perfect rhythm and I was 25th. Then we changed the tires with new ones and probably I pushed too much. I made an error at the corner entrance, I lost the front and regretfully I fell down.”

Just a few days after the end of the first International Road Racing Teams Association privateer teams test at Valencia, the WTR San Marino Team returned to testing; this time in the rain at Jerez.

The first day, Saturday, was characterized by strong rain, which made it impossible to enter the track until 2pm, when, fortunately, the rain let up.  Both 125cc rider Johann Zarco and Moto2’s Valentin Debise gave the best of themselves, with Zarco finishing 2nd with a time of 1’57.479 – just 8 tenths off the pace -  and Valentin Vazquez finishing with the sixth-best time of 1’57.92; less than two seconds behind the Moto2 class leader, Alex De Angelis.

During the day Sunday, bursts of rain disturbed almost every session, forcing teams to withdraw almost every hour. The track remained wet and did not help either rider, who both posted their best times during the morning sessions. Debise finished 18th with a time of 1’46.821, and Zarco finished 11th with a fastest time of 1’50 .795.  Zarco also crashed twice during the day; once in the morning and once during the afternoon session.

Rain continued into Monday, and rather than risk injury to its riders and damage to its machines, the WTR San Marino Team called an end to their testing. IRTA testing continues at Jerez from March 27-29.

Johann Zarco
“These tests were a bit unstable, ruined by [lack of] time and by the heavy rain which fell. We could not try everything we wanted, but at least we managed to test a new engine, on which my mechanics have worked hard all winter and was really going strong.  We were therefore very happy about it. Saturday we rode until the afternoon because the morning was impossible for the wet track. I felt very good and the bike felt good. In fact, I finished in second place – positive for me and for the team.
Sunday we rode in both wet and dry conditions, but I didn’t feel as good as on the bike as I did at Valencia and I had no confidence. I should have stopped in to make more adjustments, but I kept racing, knowing that I had some problems, but it was a mistake because they continued, and I fell and ended my day. Throughout the evening the mechanics worked hard to fix the bike and to recover the lost time, but the weather wanted something else
I wanted to thank the mechanics for the work that they did on the bike and thank them for their efforts.
They are real fans and push me to always do better. I’m really happy because the bike is competitive and I have competent mechanics. I just have to relax and focus on my riding to catch up. ”

Valentin Debise
“Jerez is a circuit that is very different than Valencia, and we had to change the setup of the bike because it was all new to us. In Valencia there were only tight corners, whereas here they are very wide: so it was very, very different. Now I think we can be ready for the next test, here at Jerez later this month. “
