Eastern Airways UK F1 Sidecar Championship revs up for Rounds 1 & 2

March 31st, 2010 cranialooze No comments

Pembrey in South Wales will host the opening rounds of the UK F1 Sidecar Championship, thought by many sport insiders to be the best field since the late 1980s. A top-quality field of F1 sidecars, the like of which hasn’t been seen since the 1986 Silverstone Grand Prix, will be heading down to the former Spitfire base to set their mark on the opening stages of the Battle of Britain.

The current World Champions, Ben & Tom Birchall and former triple World Champions Tim & Tristan Reeves would be favorites to clean up under normal circumstances, but some interesting rule changes mean the odds may be about to be turned on their heads. The new World Championship rule amendments have forced teams to make the switch to standard engines as opposed to the highly tuned motors they have been able to run previously, and Tim Reeves estimates that the change costs as much as one second per lap. Coincidentally, one second per lap was about the advantage they had over the best of the National teams in previous seasons, so a seven or eight outfit scrap at the head of the field now looks to be on the cards.

The action gets underway on Saturday April 10, and culminates with the Eurosport televised races on Sunday April 11. Pembrey is located just off the A484 near Llanellli in South Wales, within easy reach of the M4 motorway.

Cheshire-based CTR Sidecar racing will also be running in the event and hoping to be pushing for a podium result. Strong pre-season testing at Mallory Park and Anglesey have left the team ready to make their mark on the map for the opening round.

Craig Chaplow CTR Driver:
“Pembrey is a special place for Dan and me, as we made our European debut there two years ago, but the thought of 30 F1 sidecars heading into a tight 180 degree hairpin gets the blood flowing, and we will have to ride hard to make our mark.”

FIM Sidecar World Championship – Treasure Racing Tests in Victoria

February 12th, 2010 cranialooze No comments

Treasure Racing attended Winton Motor Raceway in Northern Victoria recently to continue its bike testing to increase its knowledge of the new LCR Chassis adjustments in preparation for the 2010 FIM World Championship. The main purpose of the day was to focus on suspension.

The Winton racetrack has become quite a bit bumpier in the years since Adam or Darren last rode at the track in 2006. The bumpy track created an environment to test the suspension adjustments allowing Adam to focus on obtaining the perfect balance between low impact ripples while still maintaining composure over the harder hitting bumps for the LCR.

The day started out slow with each test session becoming quicker as adjustments were made. The Sidecar lap record at this track was set by Stacey Sellar at 1:30.088 in 2006, Adam and Darren managed to go out in their last session and lap consistently in the mid to low 1:30’s until the final lap when the boys posted a new un-official lap record of 1:29.63.

Thanks must go to Mick DeWith and Justin Sheppard for their help throughout the day. We would like to take this opportunity to announce that Treasure Racing now has it’s own official Website. We can be found at  www.treasureracing.com Thanks to our Website designer and Host Bradley Brown for all of his help and input.

Feel free to drop into our website and sign on to the forum and comments page to keep up to date with our achievements throughout 2010.

Sidecar driver Phil Dongworth dies in Southern 100 crash.

July 16th, 2009 cranialooze No comments

It’s no secret that we here at Motourage are huge fans of motorcycle sidecar racing, especially that which takes place every year during the Isle of Man TT.  It is therefore with sorrow that we report on the death of sidecar driver Phil Dongworth from injuries sustained during a crash during last night’s Southern 100 qualifying session at Ballanoris, Isle of Man.  Phil was 43 years old.  Phil’s passenger Stuart Castles was also taken to the hospital with injuries but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Phil Dongworth, originally from Stamford Bridge, York, was an experienced competitor who, along with passenger Gary Partridge, raced to a second-place finish at this year’s Isle of Man TT.

Motourage celebrates the life of one of our racing brothers, and we take comfort in knowing that he died doing what he loved most, racing motorcycles.
